EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US against five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals that were central to efforts to enact legislation governing American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the move.

The restrictions were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the rules are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming a facet of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.
