Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for several hours when dozens of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons containing numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why criminals use a technique that proves especially affected by weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that these practices become not financially viable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
These airspace violations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Recent incidents in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
